You've found the dress. The fit is right, and the neckline is perfect. Then you put your usual bra on underneath and the straps ruin it. A good strapless bra fixes that, but only if it fits well and has the right construction to stay up all day. This guide covers how to get the size right, the features that stop a strapless bra slipping, and what to wear it with.

Start With the Right Size

A strapless bra has no straps to carry any of the weight, so the underband does nearly all the work. That makes the band fit more important here than with any other bra.

The band should feel snug but comfortable. It should sit level around your ribcage and stay put when you raise your arms. If it rides up at the back or you can easily fit more than two fingers underneath, it's too loose to support you without straps.

What Keeps a Strapless Bra in Place

The design details are what make a strapless bra reliable. Look for these features.

Silicone Grip Lining

Strips of non-slip silicone along the inside of the band and the top edge of the cups grip lightly against your skin. They keep the bra in position when you're moving, sitting or dancing.

Wide Underband

A deeper band covers more of your ribcage and spreads the pressure more evenly. That gives better support and makes the bra less likely to slide down during the day.

Side Boning

Flexible boning at the sides of the band adds structure. It stops the band from rolling or folding over and helps keep the cups in shape.

Moulded Cups

Cups that hold their own shape give you lift without straps and a smooth line under fitted fabrics like satin and jersey.

How to put on a strapless bra

How to Put On a Strapless Bra So It Stays Up

Putting a strapless bra on properly makes a real difference to how well it stays up.

  1. Start on the tightest hook. Bands loosen with wear, so begin on the firmest setting and loosen it later if you need to.
  2. Lean forward and settle in. Once it's fastened, lean forward slightly so your breasts sit fully inside the cups.
  3. Check the band. It should sit level all the way round, front and back.
  4. Check the neckline. The top edge of the cups should lie flat against your skin with no gaps.

Strapless or Multiway: Which Do You Need?

A strapless bra is made to be worn without straps, so everything about its construction goes into holding it up on its own.

A multiway bra comes with detachable straps that you can wear in several ways: classic, crossback, halterneck, one-shoulder, or with no straps at all. If you want one bra that works with lots of different necklines, a multiway gives you that flexibility.

Additional Bra Solutions

Some outfits don't leave room for any kind of band. For those, these options give you coverage or lift with nothing on show.

  • Stick-on bras: adhesive cups that attach directly to your skin and clip together at the front. They give shape and light lift under backless, low-back and plunging styles where a band would be visible.
  • Nipple covers: thin, discreet covers for smoothing and coverage. They work well under sheer fabrics, fitted tops and very minimal necklines, and on their own when you don't need any support.
  • Boob tape: flexible tape that you shape to your body to lift and hold. You can position it to suit the outfit, which makes it useful for deep plunges, cut-outs and open backs that nothing else will work under.

Strapless Bra FAQs

Should a strapless bra be tighter than a regular bra?

It should feel snug but never uncomfortable. The band is doing all the supporting, so it needs a firmer fit than a bra with straps. If you're between sizes, try going down a band size and up a cup size.

Why does my strapless bra keep slipping down?

The band is usually too loose. Check that it sits level and doesn't ride up at the back, and try the tightest hook or your sister size. Features like silicone grip lining, a wider band and side boning also help it stay in place.

Can you wear a strapless bra with a larger bust?

Yes. Look for a wide underband, side boning and structured cups, which spread the support and hold their shape. Getting the band size right matters most.
